Super World Interview Time: Dani Fazekas aka Szarkulabícc (Sakurabeats)
We’re really enjoying listening to Flowers N Birds by Hungarian lo-fi hip-hop artist Dani Fazekas aka Szarkulabícc so we were delighted when Dani agreed to answer some questions for us here in the big yellow balloon
Why did you decide to be a Musician?
I started doing graffiti and everything else that falls under the hip-hop culture (including dancing, rapping, skateboarding etc.). This was when my interest in this particular form of art began.
What was the first piece of music you loved, and why?
My interest in music started when i was sixteen years old, at the end of high school when i was touched by beat maker, Mujo. It was a truly unforgettable experience. It was the first time I encountered lo-fi hip hop. I also loved Gramatik, Al’tarba and DJ. Krush. When I started making music, these songs really influenced me, because i wanted to make hip-hop music without any lyrics (a capella). Music which is simply good to listen to. Making music became my form of relaxation.
What is your favourite song that you’ve written and why?
My favourite song that I’ve written is Odd Deal from my Flame Flyes EP. I think it’s the most powerful song of mine and I find it funny that I finished the final steps in a WWII (World War Two) cellar that my friend lived in at the time.
What’s the music scene like in Hungary?
Hungary is a small country and also a small nation and because of this underground culture is making slow, small steps. However, there is a new growing generation and more and more people are joining this wave. Small, but open-minded groups are making things happen. Since Budapest is the capital, the progressive movements are mainly taking place here, but there are also many talented producers and rappers in smaller towns.
How do you know when a song you’re working on is finished?
I know a song is finished when I feel its vibe and start rapping to it. I can get a better feel of the rhythm by doing so.
What song by another artist do you wish you had written and why?
I really like British hip hop especially Dirty Dike from High Focus Records, because in my opinion he is the best British rapper and also a great producer. I also enjoy Das Efx a 90’s US band. My favourite song from Dirty Dike has to be Isleham Swamp produced by Joe Corfield. It is undeniable that the music, the video and the acapella are in perfect harmony. The whole thing is really well put together.
What artist(s) has been your biggest influence and in what way?
The artist who has had the biggest influence on me is Dirty Dike because of his powerful rapping and beat making as well as Lee Scott from Blah Records UK because of his cool style.
Name a song that makes you happy and why does it have that effect?
I really enjoy Return of the Twat from Dirty Dike because of its humour.
What is the best new band/artist that you’ve heard recently?
Yung Internet from the Netherlands is the newest band that I like because of their new music style. They make alternative club music mixed with smooth lyrics, hip-hop elements and electronic vibes.
What’s your idea of success?
My goal is to make something long lasting and make as many people like my music as possible.
Dani studies at the Hungarian University of Fine Arts and sent one of his paintings for inclusion in the gallery. Great, innit?!?!?
