It’s the return of the Brainwaves summer lifeguards show. OK, just one lifeguard (from Brainwaves favorite Blotto). Plus great music from Rosi Golan, I Hate Kate, Mission of Burma, Ivri Lider and George Harrison-produced 70s one hit (hardly) wonders, Splinter.
It’s a never-ending story of love and Brainwaves with a “never” set. Music from Rilo Kiley, Coldplay, Echo and the Bunnymen, Wire Train, Delaney and Bonnie, the Feeling and – of course – Limahl with their never-ending story. Plus music from Squelch, Leonard Cohen, Sugardrum, the Red Sun Project and much more.
It’s back to the blackboard with Blackfield – Brainwaves kicks off with two songs from the band’s most recent album. Later in the show, it’s Part Two of our Dreamers special, with dreamy music from Nada Surf, the Teardrop Explodes, Boy and Bear, Supertramp and much more.

Is it summer where you’re listening? Even if the weather is gloomy or lockdowns have got you stuck inside, this week’s Brainwaves will pick you up, with a show filled with “summer” music. There’s a summer town, a summer place, an idiot summer, a summer breeze, summer love and some summer skin.
Flashback for two musical TV and movie events of the last few years that really got under my skin (in a good way): John Carney’s Sing Street and David Lynch’s Twin Peaks: The Return. Music from both – including the Chromatics, Au Revoire Simone, Sharon Van Etten, Lissie, Femmepop, the Astronaut Arcade and the great Angelo Bandalamenti. Plus the Cure, Twinsmith, New Pornographers, Any Trouble and much more.
Three songs from 60s pop stars The Zombies – including one from their 2015 album, “Still Got That Hunger.” Plus music from Zombie Rod Argent and lots more: Talking Heads, Lemonheads, Belle & Sebastian, Jenny Lewis, Shortstraw, Juliana Hatfield and Puppets of Castro.
Songs about the army, about dreamers, and about Army Dreamers (thanks Kate Bush!) on this week’s Brainwaves. Music from Ben Folds, Gomez, Guster, Chvches, Mission of Burma and Carl Douglas in the army set. Cheap Trick, New Order, Ra Ra Riot, Fool’s Garden, Echosmith and Local Natives in the dream set. And much more. Don’t fall asleep, this show rocks!
Has it been four years already since Brian’s daughter left home? It’s OK – she went to college and got married (not in that order). Here’s a musical look back with some “leaving” music – from Queen, the Beatles, Jesse Malin, Franz Ferdinand, America, R.E.M., Keane, Novi Split, the Editors and more. Plus music from Grandaddy, the Flaming Lips, Teenage Fanclub and Nada Surf.
Feeling spacey? Brainwaves has the perfect space set this week. With music from Michael & Shimrit Greilsammer, the Avocado Club, the Tubes, Camera Obscura, A Flock of Seagulls, Steven Wilson, David Bowie and the Shins. This week’s Brainwaves features some obscure 70s pop plus a “trouble” set with music from Coldplay, R.E.M., Romeo Void, Fountains of Wayne and more. Do you remember Sweathog? The Assembled Multitude? Tune in and tickle your indie memories.
Brainwaves opens this week with the Israeli dream-pop duo the Aprons. Local music reviewer Ben Shalev called their album Any Human Heart “one of the most beautiful Israeli albums to come out recently.” Tune and let us know if you agree. Also on the show: Teenage Fanclub, World Party (and a World Party cover), our favorite Steven Wilson song of the last few years, Pharaoh’s Daughter, the Weakerthans, the Pineapple Thief and much more.
Aren’t you lucky you tuned in to Brainwaves this week, because we’ve got some “lucky” songs for you – “Lucky,” “Lucky You,” “Lucky Ones” and Lucky Boy” (you guess the artists!) Plus a few La’s from the likes of Low, Old Man River, Elliot Smith and the Polyphonic Spree. It’s a mini-“L” show!
This week in 1996, eclectic American musician Kevin Gilbert passed away. Whether solo or in his bands Toy Matinee and Giraffe, Kevin has been a long-time Brainwaves favorite. So this week we remember Kevin with some of his music to start the show. Plus tunes from Sheryl Crow, Peter Gabriel, the Guess Who, Daft Punk, Sparks, the Stills, the Icicles, Steven Wilson and much more.
Let’s head back to the 1980s for a special Brainwaves of New Wave and music Brainwaves played in its original incarnation – way back in 1983. Tears for Fears, Ultravox, Heaven 17, XTC, Nick Lowe, Rockpile, Klark Kent, A Flock of Seagulls, Joy Division and more.

Plus a long-lost radio commercial from 1972 for the Raspberries. Get revved up to rock the “R”s.
Usually on Israeli Independence Day – which falls this week on Wednesday — the parks and nature reserves are full of trekkers and BBQs. This year, we’re still on full pandemic lockdown. The next best thing? A special Brainwaves with two hours of Israeli music to celebrate. Featuring Ethnix, Forest, Monika Sex, Mashina, Avtipus, a double play of Kaveret and much more.
It was supposed to be tax filing day this last week in the U.S., but, you know, corona. Brainwaves still has a fun show about taxes and taxis, though. Music from Leisure Process, Taxi Taxi, The Vapors, Mashina, the Bellyachers, Romeo Void and much more. File your taxes and stay safe!
This week’s Brainwaves has more music and less talk – well, no talk at all. It’s all about the music. With songs from Weezer, Matt Pond PA, Boy and Bear, Good Old War, XTC, We Were Pirates, Young the Giant, The Flaming Lips and much more!
You can’t make this stuff up – in the middle of the coronavirus crisis comes the Jewish holiday of Passover which has, at its core, the retelling of the ten plagues. This week’s Brainwaves is our special Passover episode which features snakes, frogs, blood and a Pharaoh or two (but no viruses). Music from Neko Case, Oingo Boingo, Prince, Snakefinger, TV21, the Cure, Pinback and much more. Stay healthy, stay indoors, listen to Brainwaves.
