Brainwaves is ruled by kids this week. A long set of “children’s” music (that’s not just for kids) from David Bowie, the Counting Crows, R.E.M., Supertramp, Bloc Party, Arcade Fire, Nick Gilder, the Kinks and of course Butterfly Child. Plus, Radiohead shows us some fake plastic trees, which makes a great segue to Plastic Bertrand giving us some 70s Belgian punk. Tune in and enjoy – it’s eclectic, it’s alternative, it’s just great music!
This week, Brainwaves takes to the trees with a set of swinging monkey music from the chimps over at the Counting Crows, the Dickies, Jonathan Coulton, the Beatles, the Banana Splits (who had a man in a monkey suit starring as one of the ‘Splits) and, of course, the Monkees. Plus a short set of Japan tunes from Coldplay, Sebastian Teiller and Japan. Monkeys in Japan? It’s just another two hours of electric alternative indie from your friends at Brainwaves.
This week, it’s a music only episode of Brainwaves. Is it time to hang the DJ, as the Smiths once crooned? Well, at least for this week it is. Music on the show from Northern Portrait, Lush, Steven Wilson, the Cure, Pink Floyd, Phillip Glass, Death Cab for Cutie, the Postal Service, the Delgados, the Doves, Belle and Sebastian and much more.
Crocodiles and alligators featured on this week’s Brainwaves. From Elton John, the Beach Boys, Echo and the Bunnymen, R.E.M., Tilly and the Wall and Neil Cicierega. Plus songs for each day of the week. Chicago has Saturday, The Small Hours go for Sunday, the Happy Mondays do Mondays, Counting Crowes own Tuesdays, The Guess Who has Wednesdays, and the Cure grabs Fridays. But who’s in charge of Thursday? Ask Aqua – it might have something to do with a certain Barbie Girl.
Mother’s Day may be just a Hallmark holiday but it’s still fun to mark the matriarch’s special day. That was last week but it’s not too late to treat Mom to some “mother” songs from Sparks, Peter Gabriel, Kaki King, Peter Gabriel, Natalie Merchant, Daft Punk, Paul Simon, John Lennon, Sufjan Stevens and, of course, the band Mother Mother. Plus a tribute to Kevin Gilbert who died this week in 1996.
Two special sets of music on this week’s Brainwaves. “Brother” songs from Orphaned Land and Toad the Wet Sprocket, plus six songs about “running” from the Polyphonic Spree, the Buzzcocks, MissFlag, Snow Patrol, Vampire Weekend and the Doves. Rami & Eiland like to sleep alone. Starcastle wonders “Where have they gone?” And much more. Don’t walk but run to listen to this week’s show!
It’s Israel’s 74th birthday this week, so it’s time for the annual Brainwaves all-Israeli music special. Songs in Hebrew and English, all originating in the Holy Land. You’ll hear Ethnic, Forestt, Natan Goshen, Red Meadow, Monika Sex, Avraham Tal, Efo HaYeled, Mashina, Beit HaBubot, Ivri Lider and much more. Open your cultural lens and enjoy music you’ll hear nowhere else but Brainwaves.
Taking a riff off of Jerry Seinfeld’s iconic web series, Brainwaves brings you songs about taxis and taxes (but actually no comedians, that was a tiny fib to get your attention). Music from Leisure Process, the Buzzcocks, Taxi Taxi, Pink Floyd, the Porcupine Tree, the Stranglers, the Bellyachers, Norman Salant and his saxophone madness, Men without Hats and much more. Don’t let doing your taxes get you down. There’s a taxi for that on this week’s Brainwaves.
It’s Passover week and you know what that means – two hours of eclectic alternative indie music for the holiday. Themed songs all about Egypt, slaves, princes, snakes, frogs, blood, bread and an ol’ man named (Amos) Moses. It’s coming up on this week’s annual Brainwaves Passover special!
Brian Blum plays Brian Wilson on this week’s Brainwaves as the Beach Boys frontman revives a long-lost classic. Plus four songs about “eyes” from Bill Nelson, Snow Patrol, Keane and the Lords of the New Church. And more of your favorite eclectic indie alternative – Mishael Dickman, Nada Surf, Mashina, Bloc Party, Sterolab and much more.
Brian’s wife Jody doesn’t love everything he plays on Brainwaves. So this week, two hours of music designed especially to pass “the Jody test.” Melodic pretty indie pop from Teenage Fanclub, Cheap Star, Josh Pyke, Nick Hayward, the Bangles, Rosi Golan, Lili Frost, the Go-Betweens, Joe Jackson, Iron & Wine and much more. Jody loves this show. You will too!
This week on Brainwaves, songs about changes. Music from David Bowie, the Stills, Old Man River, the New Pornographers, Gin Blossoms, Ben Folds, Daft Punk, the Stranglers, the Killers and much more! (Don’t worry, nothing’s changing about Brainwaves, other than even better music than ever!)
Peace songs because, well, you know. From David Broza, Juliana Hatfield, Albert Hammond and the Bats. Plus some shiny songs, too: Harper Simon, Echo and the Bunnymen, Donovan, Jonathan Edwards. It’s all on this week’s Brainwaves.
Voices of bees to start this week’s Brainwaves – The Bee Gees and Voice of the Beehive, yes, but also Neil Halstead (Queen Bee) and the Residents (Mr. Bee’s Bumble). And let’s get wild with a set of “wild” songs from the Stranglers, Timbuk 3, Lovedrug, Talking Heads and Michael Greilsammer. All that and more on eclectic alternative indie Brainwaves.
Last week’s Brainwaves was a special “all 70s songs in covers” episode. This week: the original 70s versions of those songs. Same playlist but with the original artists. Including 70s bands you know and love: Rod Stewart, ELO, Big Star, Three Dog Night, Jim Croce, Led Zeppelin, Neil Young, Genesis, Christie, the Hudson Brothers and three songs from Pink Floyd. Plus much more. Hop in the Brainwaves hot tub time machine!
This week, Brainwaves goes back to the 1970s – in covers! Some of your favorite songs from nearly five decades ago sung by modern artists, including Mathew Sweet, Pacifika, Aimee Mann, Cheap Trick, The Wallflowers, Greg Kihn, R.E.M., Ugly Kid Joe, Nada Surf, the Ramones and much more. No disco, just great eclectic alternative indie. Only on Brainwaves.
You may not be listening to Brainwaves on a Saturday, but we have Saturday songs to keep you on your toes. From the Jam, Blitzen Trapper, Sparklehorse and America. Plus double plays from the Abrams and New Musik. And to round things out, check out the Muppets song that was originally used in a soft porn movie from the 1970s!
On this week’s show, music for Valentine’s Day. “Heart” songs from Marillion and Genesis. Jonathan Richman and the Modern Lovers are in there, too. “Wounds and Kisses” from Israeli rockers Monika Sex. Q-Feel go dancing. And Three Dog Night gives us an Old Fashioned Love Song. All that and much more on Brainwaves!
It’s the Emilys this week on Brainwaves. “Emily” songs from Martha Wainright, Fool’s Garden, the Manic Street Preachers and Keane. Plus a double play from Juliana Hatfield, fun from fun. and the Beach Boys, Nada Surf covering Depeche Mode, XTC getting religious and, for our trip back to the pop 70s, one of the most maligned songs of the decade (but one which we still love). What’s the song? Tune in to find out!
Hanukah came early this year so it’s not quite the dead of winter, but that’s not a reason to forego the Brainwaves annual “all light” episode. Music to light up the darkness from bands you know and love (and some you don’t): Snow Patrol, Apples in Stereo, Owl City, Andrew Belle, King Harvest, Aviv Geffen, Starflower, Azure Ray, .fun and much more. Don’t let the dark get you down. Get light. This week on Brainwaves.
