FAQ

Who is andHow.FM?

What does “live stream” mean?

The andHow.FM Live Stream is the online equivalent of the 107.5 FM on-air broadcast and is in operation 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. However, because the live stream is distributed across the internet, there will be an inherent latency so that what you will hear online may be slightly delayed when compared to the on-air broadcast (anywhere from a few seconds to a couple of minutes).

What is RDS and how do I get it?

Radio Data System (RDS) is a communications protocol standard for embedding small amounts of digital information in conventional FM radio broadcasts.  We add this layer of information into our broadcast of 107.5 FM.  If you have a car audio or home audio system that displays the FM station, and you see our call sign “andHowFM” on the display panel when you are tuned-in, then you have the Radio Data System feature.  With this feature you will get a regular update of the song title & artist playing on your RDS-capable receiver, if radio text (RT) is enabled, much like you do on your media players.

At what rate does andHow.FM send the streaming signal?

andHow.FM currently offers live streaming in the MP3 digital compression format. The MP3 format is the most widely adopted internet streaming format and plays in a variety of player types: for Android, iPad, iPhone, Blackberry, Windows or Adobe Flash Player, Windows Media Player,  iTunes and RealPlayer for your PC. The andHow.FM MP3 stream is broadcast a rate of 128kbps.

Can I access the andHow.FM Broadcast Stream from my Wi-Fi or Internet Radio device?

However, these aggregators may not always have the correct playlist for andHow.FM’s stream listed in their online directory. Can I get the live stream from my internet device to my home audio system?

Aside from directly cabling your device to your stereo receiver from your device’s sound card or connecting to a Bluetooth capable audio device, there are wireless stereo receiver and computer transmitter components that allow reception of a wireless stream directly from a computer or the internet.  Some modern audio receivers also include this functionality. Please check with your local audio/video store for more information and to find the solution that works best for you.

Do I have to pay for the andHow.FM Broadcast Stream?

No.  The Live Stream & our FM broadcasts are and have always been free to listen. All of our operations are made possible by the generous donations of our listeners and supporters. Please consider supporting andHow.FM today!

Is my contribution tax-deductible?

Yes! Contributions to andHow.FM are tax-deductible to the full extent of the law, deducting the fair market value of any thank-you gifts received.

Why does the stream sometimes stop for a while or stutter?

This may be due to Internet congestion during certain periods of the day. Internet bandwidth that is required to transmit the stream is limited throughout the chain from us to you, and this limitation slows the data bringing you the audio signal. The stream data is not lost during these congested periods, but it is held up until adequate bandwidth is available to receive the data.  You may see messages that refer to the term ‘buffering’, this is what is happening when that occurs.

I’m having trouble accessing the andHow.FM stream.

It may be due to your computer’s or mobile devices’ media file preference settings, a web browser plug-in issue, or a media player compatibility issue. Our web player located on the website is HTML5 compatible and our mobile apps are compatible with most devices widely available.  Please note: to listen directly to our stream servers, you must have a mp3 streaming capable player installed on your computer or mobile device in order to access the streams. Additionally, you will need a mobile application to access the streams from your mobile device. Visit the support site of your mobile device manufacturer for more info.

After clicking one of the stream links, nothing happens. What should I do?

  1. Make sure that a media player is installed on your device. Once your media player of choice is installed, restart your device and try again.
  2. If your media player opens when clicking on a live stream link but you still can’t hear anything, confirm your speakers are on and the volume is turned up.
  3. If clicking on the link doesn’t automatically open a media player, then copy and paste the URL into the location bar of your player.
  4. If you are listening at work, your company may have a “firewall” enabled to securely protect its internal data or there are settings on your browser or computer that won’t allow external data to be fed to you.  All of our streams are accessible to most business networks, unless streaming applications are blocked directly.  Contact your local IT Administrator to assist you.
  5. If you are using a computer that is not connected to a firewall, consult the support documentation related to file type associations.  This documentation can be found on your operating system’s website or in “Help” on your computer.
